Arrivals & Departures



Hay tiempo de sobra. : There is plenty of time.


How to talk about arrivals and departures?

There are some very useful expressions students tend to struggle with. I hope this helps you.


Let’s start by a couple of useful verbs


  • Llegar : to arrive (regular verb in the simple present tense and future tense)

  • Salir : to set off / to leave / to go out (irregular verb in the simple present tense and future tense)







When talking about means of transport we will use the third conjugation


  • Llega : it arrives

  • Sale : It leaves / it sets off / it goes out


When talking about yourself you will use the first conjugation


  • Llego : I arrive

  • Salgo : I leave. / I set off / I go out



Let’s have a look at some useful vocabulary.


  • El avión : The plane

  • El tren : the train

  • El bus / autobús : the bus

  • El barco : the ship




OK, now that this information is clear, let’s see some very useful questions and expressions.


  • ¿A qué hora llega el avión?  :  What time does the plane arrive?

  • ¿A qué hora sale el bus?  :  What time does the bus leave?


  • El tren llega a las ocho de la mañana. : The train arrives at eight in the morning.

  • El barco sale mañana. : The ship sets off tomorrow.

  • El bus sale mañana en la mañana. : The bus leaves tomorrow morning.




What happens when there is a delay? How about YOU arriving late too? (Including other tenses and conjugations.) Notice the change in the vocabulary in some cases.


  • El bus va lento. No va a llegar a tiempo. : The bus is going slow. It won’t get there on time.

  • Uy, llego tarde. : Uyy I am late.

  • Perdón, llego tarde.  : I am sorry I'm late.

  • Disculpe/ Disculpen la tardanza.  : Sorry for the delay.

  • El barco no llegará a tiempo. : The ship won’t arrive on time.

  • El avión está retrasado. : The plane is delayed.

  • ¿Llegaremos a tiempo? : Will we arrive on time?




How about when the time of arrival is good? 


  • El avión siempre llega a tiempo. : The plane always arrives on time.

  • El tren llegará tranquilo a su hora. : The train will arrive easily on time.

  • Llegaré con bastante antelación. :  I will arrive with plenty of time.

  • Hay tiempo de sobra. : There is plenty of time.
