WH Questions in Spanish: A Simple Guide

¿Cómo escribo preguntas en español?



Asking questions is one of the most important skills when learning Spanish. Just like in English (who, what, where, when…), Spanish has its own set of question words that help you communicate in everyday situations.

Let’s break them down in a simple way 



What are WH questions?

WH questions are questions that ask for specific information. In English, they usually start with W or H (what, where, when, why…).


In Spanish, we use question words + a verb to form these questions.


*Remember to use the upside-down question mark (¿) at the beginning. Why? When we look at the non WH questions, in a future blog you will understand why this is so important. 


But for now, let’s focus on the WH questions topic. 



The most common WH words in Spanish

Here are the key ones you need to know:

  • ¿Qué? :  What?¿Qué haces? (What are you doing?)


  • ¿Quién / Quiénes? :  Who? 

    ¿Quién es ella? (Who is she?) ¿Quiénes son ellos? (Who are they?)


  • ¿Dónde? :  Where? 

    ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)


  • ¿Cuándo? :  When? 

    ¿Cuándo estudias? (When do you study?)


  • ¿Por qué? :  Why?

    ¿Por qué aprendes español? (Why do you learn Spanish?)


  • ¿Cómo? :  How? 

    ¿Cómo estás? (How are you?)


  • ¿Cuál / Cuáles? :  Which? 

    ¿Cuál prefieres? (Which one do you prefer? - Only one to be picked)

¿Cuáles prefieres? (Which ones do you prefer? - More than one can be picked)


  • ¿Cuánto / Cuánta? How much (Uncountable)

¿Cuánta agua bebes? (How much water do you drink?)

¿Cuánto café quieres? (How much coffee do you want?)


  • Cuántos / Cuántas? : How many? (Countable)

¿Cuántas maletas tienes? (How many suitcases do you have?)

¿Cuántos libros tienes? (How many books do you have?)

¿Cuántos años tienes? (How old are you?)



Important : Accents matter!

All Spanish question words have an accent mark when used in questions, we call it “tilde”:


  • que ❌ vs qué ✅

  • como ❌ vs cómo ✅


Without the accent, they have a different meaning:

 Como pizza = I eat pizza 

¿Cómo pizza? = Do I eat pizza? (Shall I eat pizza?)



How to form questions in Spanish


In Spanish, you usually don’t need to change the word order too much.


Question word + verb + subject (optional)


Por ejemplo (For example):

  • ¿Dónde trabajas?

  • ¿Por qué estudias español?

  • ¿Qué quieres?


You can also include the subject if you want to be clear:¿Dónde vives tú?


* Notice: When we use the WH questions, if you want/ need to add the subject or personal pronoun, this must be after the verb, not in front of the verb as you do when writing a sentence.



Tips to remember WH questions


  • Practice with real-life questions (about your day, your routine, your plans)

  • Repeat them often and try to answer them out loud

  • Write your own questions and use them in class

Put the words in the correct order, add  question marks and capital letters where needed:


  1. vives / dónde / tú

  2. estudias / por qué / español

  3. haces / qué / ahora

  4. es / quién / él



Ejercicio 4: Write your own questions


Write one question for each word:


  • ¿Qué…?

  • ¿Dónde…?

  • ¿Cuándo…?
