You have been learning all the very basics, but you feel the frustration of not being able to express your future plans. But here I am going to show you how to use the simple future tense in Spanish. More verb conjugations to learn!? Well.. luckily, the simple future tense (el futuro simple) is one of the easiest tenses to learn, because the endings are the same for all regular verbs. Yay! Is what I hear my students say. 🙂
Let’s see how to Form the Simple Future Tense
Unlike other tenses, you don’t remove the verb ending. Instead, you simply add the future endings to the whole infinitive (hablar, comer, vivir).
Endings for All Regular Verbs - Future tense
Subject - Personal pronoun | Ending |
yo | -é |
tú | -ás |
él/ ella/ usted | -á |
nosotros / nosotras | -emos |
vosotros / vosotras | -éis |
ellos / ellas / ustedes | -án |
Por ejemplo:
-AR Verbs (hablar – to speak)
yo hablaré (I will speak)
tú hablarás (you will speak)
él/ ella/ usted hablará (he/she/you will speak)
nosotros/ nosotras hablaremos (we will speak)
vosotros/ vosotras hablaréis (you all will speak)
ellos/ellas/ustedes hablarán (they/you all will speak)
-ER Verbs (comer – to eat)
yo comeré (I will eat)
tú comerás (you will eat)
él/ella/usted comerá (he/she/you will eat)
nosotros/ nosotras comeremos (we will eat)
vosotros/ vosotras comeréis (you all will eat)
ellos/ ellas/ ustedes comerán (they/you all will eat)
-IR Verbs (vivir – to live)
yo viviré (I will live)
tú vivirás (you will live)
él/ ella/ usted vivirá (he/she/you will live)
nosotros/ nosotras viviremos (we will live)
vosotros/ vosotras viviréis (you all will live)
ellos / ellas/ ustedes vivirán (they/you all will live)
Let’s see some examples in context
Mañana hablaré con mi jefe. (Tomorrow I will speak with my boss.)
Nosotros comeremos en un restaurante italiano. (We will eat at an Italian restaurant.)
Ellos vivirán en Barcelona el próximo año. (They will live in Barcelona next year.)
Reminder
The simple future tense is often used with time expressions such as mañana (tomorrow), la próxima semana (next week), or el año que viene/ el próximo año (next year).
You can also use it to express predictions or promises.
Mañana lloverá. (It will rain tomorrow.)
Te ayudaré. (I will help you.)
As you can see…
The simple future tense is easy: add the same endings to the infinitive.
Endings: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án.
Use it to talk about future plans, predictions or intentions.
Once you’ve got this tense, you’ll be able to express your goals, plans and dreams in Spanish with confidence.
Remember you can also use the verb to go (ir a + infinitive verb) to express future plans or events.
“Nunca te rindas.”
Never give up.

Let’s do some practice
